Compalaya Volley is delighted to inform you of the imminent arrival of our mobile standalone Beach Volleyball Net, the Copaya BV9000, well ahead of our initially projected timeline at the end of December. This successful venture owes its accomplishment to the outstanding efforts of our esteemed group member, player, committee investor and donor CPA Allan. His diligence in procuring this specialized net from the USA, coupled with collaborative efforts to overcome initial procurement challenges in Canada and a strategic backup plan executed in Germany in cooperation with the donor partner committee member, Dr. Martin, has culminated in the net's arrival in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Allan for his dedicated commitment, resourcefulness, and significant contribution to enhancing our local beach volleyball experience. The forthcoming net will undergo customization with modifications tailored to the unique challenges presented by the beach environment in Playa. We anticipate its operational readiness for our upcoming session on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.
This new acquisition will replace the leased Easton Volleyball net generously provided by our esteemed veteran player, Canadian Fire Brigade Lieutenant Andre, to whom we extend our sincere thanks. Lt Andre's support has substantially contributed to the development of both new and existing players during the period until the arrival of the professional-grade equipment, fostering a conducive environment for progress.
Furthermore, we are pleased to announce that by mid-December 2023, the net will be available for use and borrowing by members of the Compalaya Volley Groups and the broader Compalaya community, extending to other locations, entirely free of charge. This initiative aligns with our commitment to support and enrich the local player community.
In addition to our inventory boasting the Compaya BV9000, a full-size Volleyball Net (coed/women/men net height, 8m x 16m), and the Compaya BV500, a 3/4 size Volleyball net (6m x 12m) with full men's net height, further enhance our resources for beach volleyball enthusiasts in the Playa del Carmen Section.
We express our gratitude to our dedicated committee members, CPA Allan in Canada, and Dr. Martin in Germany, for their invaluable contributions to our group's philosophy of uplifting and supporting local players and communities.

Volleyball Member Engagement Report - Volleyball session from 28 November 2023

The Tuesday beach volleyball session at Colosio Beach presented a significant challenge due to limited space and adverse weather conditions. The beach section, more eroded than usual, struggled to recover, resulting in tightly packed volleyball fields. The competition was fierce, with closely aligned field lines and players overlapping from different areas. The challenging playing field, caused by heavy overnight rain and compact sand, combined with strong north-to-south winds exceeding 25 km/hour, made it a demanding day for the game. Nevertheless, our group members, drawing on their experience and effort, successfully navigated these obstacles, turning it into an ideal opportunity for intermediate beach volleyball players to push their limits.
The main focus was on ASP and TMC players, Danyel and Ale, with the goal of immersing them in advanced-level strategic positioning plays as they progress toward becoming intermediate and eventually advanced players. Paired with seasoned players Michael and Giovanni, they adapted to the systematic and advanced style of play. The session featured rapid team changes, structured and strategic gameplay, enhancing cardio fitness, and challenging mental concentration.
Experienced players Brad and Ana contributed to the challenging and strategic play. Brad, returning after a two-month hiatus, made a remarkable comeback. Ana, starting her indoor volleyball league season over the winter, displayed robust physical strength and focus, proving beneficial in challenging conditions for this session on the beach volleyball.
Ale and Danyel faced a different impact on their usual beach volleyball play but handled it with bravery during this session, as it goes beyond the recreational "ping-pong" play. Despite lacking formal volleyball training, Danyel showcased innate talent, quickly learning and adapting beach volleyball moves suggestions. His eagerness to learn and adapt to small corrections during and outside the sideout from senior players positions him as a favorite for systematic play. Ale, integrated into systematic strategic play, displayed improved skills and focus in setting, adapting to the challenges posed by wind-induced changes in the ball's trajectory.
A significant part of the session's success goes to Giovanni, whose exceptional involvement and guidance infused the beach volleyball spirit. His skills and experience were evident, providing a sense of calm maturity in the game play and contributing to the overall performance and sense of harmonic playing atmosphere of the group. His assistance in today's session, I am glad to call him my cover partner on the field and session.

Post-Sunday, a day for reflection. It is crucial to honor the traditions our location offers, as they shape the place we aim to call home, be it for the short or long term stay for many of us.
Playa del Carmen is in the heart of the Riviera Maya region of the Maya, with many visible and invisible historical elements in this area referring to a highly developed civilization that once dominated this land.
Who are the Maya?
The Maya, a Mesoamerican civilization, are known for the only fully developed written language in the pre-Columbian Americas, along with their art, architecture, and advanced mathematical and astronomical systems. Despite not being a unified empire, Maya city-states shared culture, religion, and intricate hieroglyphic writing, the only complete system in the Americas. The Maya civilization extended across southern Mexican states, Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador, and western Honduras.
Culture
Religion
Maya beliefs, akin to the Aztec and Inca, centered on cyclical time. Rituals were linked to celestial and terrestrial cycles, with priests interpreting these for prophetic insights. Human sacrifice was part of Maya practices, symbolizing complex cosmology with three major planes: Earth, underworld, and heavens.
Architecture
Maya architecture, spanning millennia, is marked by stepped pyramids. Cities were built considering natural features, often reflecting haphazard growth. The southern lowlands, central lowlands, and northern lowlands constituted the Maya region.
Art

Under pleasantly balanced and agreeable weather—sunny but not too hot, accompanied by a gentle breeze—we organized a special group volleyball play session for our experienced veteran members and long-time Playa del Carmen residents, Giovanni (20 years) and Johann (15 years). After a hiatus of several months for both Giovanni and Johann, this session marked their reactivation into Playa beach volleyball. The atmosphere was decidedly experience veteran-centric Playense true beach volleyball players, with Michael, Giovanni, Johann, Alan, and the sidelined Frank taking on the roles of sideline watchers, due to injury not able to play. They were joined by players like Ana, Demian, and the temporary addition of Chad from Canada, who stepped in as non-confirmed players to substitute for the excused confirmed players, Will and Mariana. We explored all possible men's team configurations, with Ana being the sole woman present, having taken on a male player role due to Mariana's excuse for work commitments. Ana, playing under the men's net height, performed exceptionally well, showing no mercy by the male players and vice versa. Her effective defense against the men's spikes and shots gave the men a run for their money. On this day, Giovanni emerged as the top performer, displaying remarkable consistency and minimal errors, both as an individual player and as a valuable team member. The standout "men" team was Giovanni and Alan, closely followed by the Giovanni and Ana team configuration. Johann, after a six-month break from beach volleyball, showcased exceptional spiking and serving skills, enduring an exceptional marathon of play sequences involving him in the first part of the session. The final match between Ana & Michael and Giovanni & Allan was motivated by a friendly bet—the loser treating the winner to a beer. Giovanni and Allan emerged victorious, earning themselves a well-deserved beer. As the sun set, the atmosphere transformed into a gathering of experienced players from Playa, collectively savoring the feeling of unity and the beach volleyball spirit of camaraderie and friendship. Our regular group volleyball session today was different from usual. Although it was less focused on performance due to Michael’s timely absence and his cardio and performance routine of fast-changing play sequences, it was a great opportunity for the participating men and women team players to relax and socialize next to their active play, despite the absence of senior players. Although the senior players were at the sideline and were watching and socializing.
We experimented with a new borrowed net from an external supporter, Andre, who supports in providing the essential equipment for the volleyball net. The setup of this new volleyball net presented some challenges, mostly due to its quality and stability with the basic kits it entailed. It was replaced in the middle of the first men’s team play by a backup net provided by Allan.
In addition, Abraham was in charge and managed the team configuration and play order at today’s play session, representing Michael who had an unexpected short notice commitment and was timely absent. Abraham did a great job, and the feedback from the participant players was positive, as he kept the session flowing and the session worked well considering the high number of confirmed players. Kudos to Abraham for showing his capability to manage our group session in a brave and professional manner.
I would also like to highlight the support and generosity of our senior players Frank and Giovanni, who offered their confirmed places to guest players Arthur (Canada) and Fernando (Puerto Morelos) when we reached our limitation on the closed session places to play.
So far, in the 2x mix team matches, Demian and Ana showed their quality and won those two matches with bravado. In the women’s match, Mariana and Ana took home the trophy. In the men’s match, Demian and Abraham dominated the game, but won by a narrow margin. They faced a tough competitive team.
All in all, it was a sunny day with few clouds and a light breeze. The atmosphere was relaxed, and everyone had a great time playing volleyball together.
Well played to everybody, and a big thanks to our generous donor of the net and the senior players. Also, a special thanks to Abraham for his brave session management.
Nuestra sesión regular de voleibol en grupo de hoy fue diferente de lo habitual. In 2011, a poignant bronze sculpture was unveiled, symbolizing the Portal Maya 2012 and celebrating the Mayan calendar. Two rings within this iconic sculpture represent a Mayan ball game known as Pok-A-Tok, played over a millennium ago in this very region of our lives. This game holds significance not only in Playa del Carmen but throughout the vast expanse of the Maya regions in southern Mexico and beyond, notably in the renowned Chichen Itza, where a dedicated building stands as a testament to this sacred Mesoamerican ball game.
Pok-A-Tok, cherished by the ancient Maya, transcends time and space to resonate in the heart of Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. The game involves players (2-6) maneuvering a ball using only their elbows, knees, and hips, excluding hands, heads, and feet. A point is scored when the opposing team fails to return the ball before its second bounce or when the ball reaches the opposing end zone.
For the Maya, playing Pok-A-Tok was not merely a game but a sacred ritual intertwined with their survival. It provided a platform to express devotion to the gods, often involving the sacrificial fate of captured kings, high lords, or the losing opponents of the game.

Today's session showcased a unique playing dynamic as members of our group, including myself(Michael), engaged in a friendly match with another group. This was made possible by the generous provision of the net and setup by Abraham. Kudos to Abraham for facilitating this session and enabling the players from our group to participate.
In the initial game, Michael and Giovanni, who hadn't played together since their second-place win at the Puerto Morelos 1st tournament nine months ago, had a strong start. Despite their extended break, with Michael not practicing for 1.5 months and Giovanni for 8 months due to their injuries, they performed remarkably well given their current form, due to their extensive experience. The duo faced intermediate-level opponents, Abraham and Alan, achieving a close, hard-fought victory.
Moving on to the next game against the advanced-level Matteo and Frank, seasoned and skilled opponents, proved to be a challenge. This new team brought more experience and professionalism to their game, highlighting that age was less of a consideration compared to Giovanni and Michael. Giovanni's recurring upper leg cramps affected his performance, and both players experienced a decline in mental focus during the latter part of the match. Frank and Matteo played to their full capacity as a team and as advanced individual players. Although they lost to Matteo and Frank, the favorites for the day, it's important to note that the point margin was substantial.
In the subsequent match, Michael teamed up with the experienced player Axel. Initially, the game was neck and neck against the favorite team of the day, Matteo and Frank, with only two points separating the teams. However, as the match progressed, Michael's errors increased due to a lack of mental focus, diminishing physical energy, and the intermittent impact of a shoulder injury, particularly affecting his serves, sets, and spikes. They faced a significant setback in the latter part of the match and lost.
The final match featuring Michael and the experienced tall player Will from LA(USA) against Frank and Matteo represented an theoretical "ideal" team configuration. Will assumed the roles of blocker and attacker, taking on additional defensive actions due to Michael's declining performance in the latter part of the match. Unfortunately, the issues observed in matches with Axel seemed to resurface, characterized by Michael's struggle to maintain mental focus, dwindling energy, and increased errors in the second half of the game. Despite the loss, Will's formidable defense and spike execution contributed to a narrower point difference, but at the end the team lost.
All in all, it was a day to remember, especially thanks to Giovanni, Axel, and Will for their readiness to be team players with Michael .As work is being in process for Michael towards getting back in shape for the upcoming tournament in Cancun with Giovanni.

A Surprise-Packed Play Session Today
Despite the fear of rain, there was no rain during the whole 3hr session, the wind were light and perfect condition for the volleyball session.
Today's play session brought us some delightful surprises, mainly due to the presence of guest players Etiennes and Alice from France, now residing in Montreal, Canada. They joined our session and pleasantly surprised us with their teamwork and adaptability to the various team configurations we set up.
Etiennes and Alicia showcased an advanced level of play during this session. Both originally indoor players, they have seamlessly transitioned into mix-team beach volleyball in Montreal over the past year, originating from Lyon, France. Their harmonious play was evident, recovering after an initial loss in the beginning to secure victories in two subsequent matches. They contested against experienced players Abraham and Michael in the team win contest of 3 matches team play.
Moving on to the mix team configuration, Ana stood out as the top performer among the women, displaying her skills and capacity at precisely the right moments. She excelled in both women's team matches and mix team matches. Regina, making her way back to form after months of play abstinence, secured the second position. Completing the women's lineup was a transformed Mariana, fully recovering from a performance slump in the previous Thursday session.
Among the men, this session allowed Abraham to showcase his potential and demonstrate his capabilities within the male players of today. Since most matches involved him, playing in the mix, men, and women teams, he displayed versatility. Will could have taken Abraham's first position if he had played more, but for now, he settles for the second position, followed by Demian, who showcased his skills only in two mix team configuration.
In the best mix team category, Will and Ana claimed the trophy, followed closely by Regina and Abraham, with Mariana and Michael not far behind in the second position. In the women's category, Ana and Regina dominated, securing the pole position for the women's team.
Collectively, we explored almost all possible combinations in the mix team configuration and the women + Abraham team configuration and one men match.

Evolution of Beach Volleyball: Adapting Traditional Indoor Tactics
Beach volleyball has undergone a significant evolution, with a focus on refining traditional indoor tactical moves. Controversies arise, particularly among conventional players, regarding second shots and jump sets.
Indoor volleyball tactics are increasingly being adapted for beach volleyball with slight modifications. This shift is influenced by factors such as the reduced number of players, a smaller court, and distinct playing conditions, including stricter FIVB rules, especially concerning setting.
The new era of beach volleyball emphasizes quick sets, lateral movements, and a fast-paced style of play. Offensive strategies include spreading the court, executing quick sets, incorporating feints and fakes, and utilizing deceptive jump sets. These tactics aim to minimize the impact of opponent height on the other side of the net.
Currently, the traditional three-touch play in beach volleyball is undergoing modification, advancing to the two-step attack (increasingly attacking at the second contact). This change aims to reduce the impact of height differentials, considering the crucial role of blocking in beach volleyball. At the highest professional levels, exemplified by top Norwegian player Anders Mol in 2023, the block becomes a strategic defensive component.
Most top professional beach volleyball teams adopt a height-split team configuration, where defensive and offensive team members differ in height by around 10 centimeters or more. To counteract the height advantage, teams incorporate new tactical moves from indoor play into beach volleyball tactics, modifying and perfecting them.
One "old" tactical move in beach volleyball is the jump set, perfected and efficiently used by the Swedish duo Jonathan Shellvig and David Alman, part of the second top international world beach volleyball team. They are effective implementers of the jump set under the pseudonym "Swedish Jump Set." This move aligns with attacking on the second contact.
To be successful with the jump set, the Swedish teams break it down into technical passes: a serve-receiving pass placed perfectly at the front of the net, followed by the subsequent jump set.
Key reasons why using a jump set in beach volleyball enhances gameplay include:
The setter is higher, reducing the distance from the setter to the attacker.
If the setter is front row, they can score directly on the second contact.
The setter has a wider range of timing when setting the ball.
Receivers can place the ball for a perfect reception closer to the net.
Allows more angles and directions when setting.
Helps the attacker align better with the ball and opponents' field.
Surprises the opponent's mid-blocker due to less predictable play.
Our advanced-level players are being advised and guided to integrate the jump set and second touch attack into their practice routines and play, particularly focusing on players with setter experience or training. While these skills are essential for beach volleyball gameplay, it's important to note that achieving error-free execution can be more challenging due to the heightened scrutiny for 'double touch' violations in beach volleyball volley/set tactical actions.

Due to unexpected changes in the confirmed player structure today, three players, Abraham, Alan, and Olga, decided to participate in matches outside our session, and Christian excused himself due to work commitments. As a result, we had to adapt our planned play system for the confirmed group players and were unable to proceed with purely men's and women's teams.
The session was refocused to validate and enhance the performance of our three regular female players: Ana, Olia, and Mariana. They were joined by Danyel (ASP) and guest player Ivan (Canada) to fill in for the confirmed players who left our session for matches in neighboring sessions. Demian, Frank, and Michael, as mentor players, assisted by participating in the mixed team configuration and what we referred to as the fake "women" team configuration, providing valuable practice experience opportunities for our female players.
Among the three women, Olia stood out as the best player, displaying an increase in error-free spikes and an improved understanding of the system's positioning, which greatly contributed to her successful play in all matches today. Ana closely followed as the second-best player with her effective pokey shots, while Mariana faced some challenges in maintaining her concentration today. Danye (ASP) made his debut in this intermediate-level session and showcased his efforts. Playing alongside Demian helped him redefine and improve his skills. Guest player Ivan form canada, though a bit rusty in his play, had to adapt to the weather conditions, which are unlike those in his Canadian hometown, and adjust to the different playing system in Mexico. Thanks to his team partner Frank, he was able to regroup and focus on subsequent matches.
The best mix team had a narrow-margin victory, with Frank and Olia as the winners, followed closely by Demian and Ana. Danyel and Ivan, forming the "women" team, secured victory in the last matches of the day against Ana and Mariana, as well as Olia and Michael. Well done to Danyel and Ivan for their successful debut in our group session today.
In this session, our primary focus was on forming mixed teams with players and play at an intermediate skill level. Great job, everyone!

Today's volleyball shadow play was initially overshadowed by an intense and uncomfortable discussion atmosphere due to a misunderstanding between a returning player and the owner of the session's net. The returning player was unaware that this regular session, managed by the group lead and the net owner, follows specific rules and guidelines. Teams and players are selected based on their skill level, and it does not operate on a first-come, first-serve or round-robin format.
